“A cluttered home is a cluttered mind.” This quote has always spoken to me. For many years, I enjoyed moving (and for a while I moved almost every year while in college) because it gave me the perfect opportunity to purge my life of the things and stuff that I no longer wanted or needed. I always felt a sense of becoming lighter and happier after the purge. Now, I have been in the same home for nearly ten years! I look around and can hardly comprehend the shear amount of items that my family and I have accumulated. I am pleased and excited that that Marie Kondo's book has come my way. I am ready to purge again, and to do it all the way.
Marie stresses the importance of a vision, a dream of your perfect house and life. I dream of a house that makes me feel proud. I dream of the day that there is no mad dash to scrub everything the day before an overnight guest is expected. I long for an open, beautiful home that is easy to clean because I can actually get to the walls and floors to clean them. This has been a difficult realization for me, because this is not exactly our dream home. To simplify, the house was bought my my husband's father with the intention of flipping it. The housing market collapsed, and his father died. We were ready to create our new life together at this time, and took the house because it was already in my husband's name and we could not sell it except for a huge loss. So, it has been really hard to like this home. It's not at all what we would choose to purchase, but we are learning to embrace it. With Marie Kondo by my side, I look forward to the day when we both love our home.
